Our Past FERS

FER started in 2016 and since then has been hosting annual science fairs at Drew University and remotely. In 2023 we will be hosting our 7th ANNUAL FAIR, held 100% online to make it easier for students from multiple states to participate!

THE FIRST FER
Senior Civic Scholar Saif Yasin creates the Fair for Emerging Researchers as his senior civic project at Drew as a way to make research fun and accessible to underrepresented communities.

THE YEAR OF ST PATTY'S DAY
Zoe Coates takes over the FER in its second year. Students learn the ins and outs of the scientific method, how to write a proposal, and how to incorporate feedback.

The third FER is led by Jordan Burnett continuing the goal to bring scientific research and curriculum to underrepresented communities.

FIRST COVID CASE IN NYC

THE VIRTUAL FER
FER 4.0 is the first FER to be (quickly transitioned) virtual. Started by Stefanie DeFronzo and Marina Hahn as an in-person fair in the final months of 2019, the fair in 2020 was a feat of technology: posters converted to pictures and video, judging to Zoom.

THE ONE THAT ZOOMED BY
The fifth science fair, taken over by Shivani Mody and Yusef Shibley, was completely virtual. Drew students met with participating schools, and hosted the actual event, on Zoom.

THE TRI-STATE FER
Students from NY, NJ, and MD all came together for an entirely remote fair hosted on Hopin, an online conferencing platform.
